IMPROVISATION INTO PERFORMANCE
A series of sessions led by dance artist Konstantina Skalionta open to anyone with interest in moving, improvising and performing, without any prior experience. In every session, a safe, non- judgemental environment is created for participants to develop confidence in moving and performing, as well as in nurturing their creativity and imagination.
At the start of every session, participants are offered basic tools in improvising while being guided towards nurturing their own unique way of moving. As the session progresses, participants engage with materials and images, to explore movement that occurs from the activation of the senses, memory, and imagination. Free writing and drawing are often used as processes of recording and observing their unique movement experience.
Working either in groups or in pairs, participants will practice embodiment, performance, and movement observation in a non-judgmental environment that fosters a sense of safety. Each workshop builds upon the previous one, creating a sense of continuity and a framework for a creative process, while still allowing for a relaxed level of participation for most of the program.
Giving the opportunity to individuals without prior dance experience to become part of a creative process and performative action, dance is demystified as an art form that belongs only to those formally trained in it. The workshop moves away from the idea of dance as a process of reproducing specific movement vocabulary, technique, and aesthetics—an approach that may discourage adults from engaging with dance. The goal is to promote dance as a lived experience, with the body as the primary medium for exploration, expression, and creation.
Participants get to participate at a early performance, to practice performing as a group in front of an audience.
